Qomolangma Desert Mount
Exploring by camel, on foot, by four-wheel drive, you will find the world’s
largest dunes: sand mountains that often top 1,200 vertical feet.
Several salt lakes are located among megadunes. Scientists have
documented that the crescentic dunes superimposed on the megadune
faces often reach hights of 30 meters. This is the
17,000-square-mile zone of megadunes-the Badain Jaran
Radially symmetrical, star dunes are pyramidal sand mounds with slipfaces on
three or more arms that radiate from the high center of the mound.
They tend to accumulate in areas with multidirectional wind
regimes. Star dunes grow upward rather than laterally. In the
southeast Badain Jaran Desert of China, the star dunes are up to
500 meters tall and are presumably the tallest dunes on Earth. It
is known as a “Qomolangma Desert Mount”?
